One of the great discoveries of South American cinema in recent years was Lucia Puenzo's XXY. Great expectations awaited her follow-up, The Fish Child, and it doesn't disappoint. Based on a bestselling novel, it tells the story of well-to-do teen, Lala, from Buenos Aires, who conducts a passionate affair with Guayi, her family's Paraguayan housemaid.
When Lala's father is mysteriously murdered, Guayi becomes a suspect and is arrested in her hometown of Ypoá. Not knowing her lover is behind bars, Lala discovers further mysteries surrounding Guayi's past and links to the local legend of a fish child who guides the drowned to the bottom of Ypoá's lake.
The rich and evocative images in this sumptuous film provide an emotional substance to the rites of passage for the young lovers, leading to a powerful reunion that will change each of their lives in unexpected ways.
