One of the most brilliant films to have tackled issues of sexuality, identity, family and sibling rivalry, Prodigal Sons sets out to document its director, Kimberly Reed, as she returns for a high school reunion in small town Montana. The tension is set immediately when Kimberly informs us she used to be the quarterback all-star of her high school football team, the guy all the cheerleaders wanted and her brothers admired.
With a saint of a mother and a gay brother who fled for San Francisco as soon as he could, Kim returns home expecting to deal with reactions to her gender but ultimately ends up dealing with the mental health issues of another adopted brother. His prodigious talent and brain trauma unveil all the hidden strains of familial support, sibling threat and other identity revelations when he decides to seek out his birth lineage.
His journey delivers shivers of surprise and suspense as his true identity is revealed and his relationship with his adopted trans sister develops. A film that could only be told in documentary, the twist in its tale will have you on the edge of your seat. A guaranteed must-see.
There will be a very special post-screening Q&A session with director Kimberly Reed.
