GAZE is proud to present a rare cinema screening of Lauren Himmel's superb, low-budget lesbian classic, Treading Water. Casey is a working class girl, Alex is a lawyer, and, although their relationship is full of love, sex and attraction, it's often undermined by Casey's Catholic Irish-American family. On Christmas Eve, the family gathers and secrets begin to emerge, leading to explosive results for our heroines.

With Treading Water, Himmel has created a story with universal appeal as family guilt and resentment are pitted against sexual identity and the desire for personal freedom. It is a beautifully acted, lovingly paced film that everyone can identify with.

Best Feature Film, Torino International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival 2002

This film was really disappointing. The sound, the acting, the script, the music - all well below any decent standard. Also, the description given on this site is inaccurate. Casey is not a working class girl, she comes from a pretty well-off family. Alex is not a lawyer, she's a drug/alcohol councellor. This film was so bad it made me laugh out loud.
