Lavender Lens is the GAZE special event where classic films are re-introduced and re-interpreted by notable figures from the LGBT community. Festival guest of honour, Patricia Rozema, has picked one of the great cult film favourites - the original 1975 documentary, Grey Gardens by cinema pioneers, the Maysles Brothers, as her Lavender Lens 2009 selection.

Grey Gardens tells the story of mother and daughter, big and little Edie Bouvier Beale, close relatives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. An engrossing, dramatic, wistful, hugely entertaining and gothic story of parental dominance and wasted childhood dreams, the story of the Beales of Grey Gardens doubles as an allegory for late 20th Century America.

Rufus Wainwright has written songs about it. There has been a smash hit Broadway musical version and now Rozema has adapted the documentary into our opening night feature film, a new fictional version of Grey Gardens, starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore.
But why have generations of gay men and lesbians taken the story of the Beales to their hearts? Patricia Rozema's introduction to this unforgettable film will tease out the answer.

"One of the most haunting documentaries in a long time. It's about two classic eccentrics, two people who refuse to live the way they're supposed to, but by the film's end we see that they live fully, in ways of their own choosing." Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times

The screening is preceded by a very special public interview with Patricia Rozema and Grainne Humphreys Festival Director Jameson Dublin International Film Festival
