GAZE International LGBT Film Festival is delighted to officially announce the winners of the GAZE Film Awards 2019.
The AUDIENCE AWARD winner has been revealed as DEEP IN VOGUE, directed by Dennis Keighron-Foster and Amy Watson. Focusing on the diverse, inclusive and utterly fabulous Vogue Ball scene in Northern England, the award was chosen by the wonderful GAZE audience, from exit polls taken after each festival screening.
Our SPIRIT OF GAZE AWARD was deliberated on by the GAZE festival board, who chose the film they believe best embodies the spirit and ethos of GAZE. This year’s winner is ARE YOU PROUD?, directed by Ashley Joiner. The film was chosen as it reflects contemporary LGBTQ+ culture in an affirming, challenging and thought provoking way, allowing a necessary insight into past struggles, as well as acknowledging that the rights achieved through resistance are never a guarantee. It also deals in a sensitive way, and with open eyes and ears, about the contemporary nature of Pride today.
The previously announced jury awards for the categories of BEST IRISH SHORT, BEST INTERNATIONAL SHORT and BEST DOCUMENTARY, were announced at the closing night of the festival, and chosen by an independent Irish and international film jury. A huge thank you to this year's festival jury, compromising of four fantastic individuals – Zorian Clayton (Programmer, BFI Flare), Kate Dolan (Director), Aine Macken (Visual Artist) and Tonie Walsh (Activist, Founder – Irish Queer Archive).
